Commonly used products in a beauty regimen are toners. But I get a lot of questions about just what they are? And what are the similarities and differences in toners and swipes?? Do I need to use both or can one replace the other?? So, let’s break it down.
After your face is washed ... to tone, or not to tone? That can be quite the skincare question. My answer is that it depends.
The older generations of toners that you might be used to seeing were full of chemicals, came in an array of unnatural colors, and could probably take paint off a car. These types of products should absolutely not be used on the skin. Rule of thumb; if you open up a bottle of toner or spray, and it smells more like a bottle of booze than a lovely botanical, put the bottle down and walk away.
But on the other hand, the newer generations of “toners” are now more like a spa treatment and acts as a prep for the skin between cleansing and serum treatments. These new aged toners help to adjust the pH of the skin after cleansing, which in turn allows for better penetration of the therapeutic and anti-aging bioactive ingredients in your serums that follow. This step is a must, especially if you live in an area with less than optimal water supply and washing your face with Evian is out of the question. Most skincare serums and moisturizers are formulated to penetrate the skin at its normal pH level. Some cleansers and the type of water you use to wash with alter the skin’s natural pH.
Toners come in many forms, from hydrosols to essential oil sprays, or even potent swipes that act as an exfoliant and not just a pH prep step. The aromatherapy benefits from these products can be a lovely addition to your daily “self-care through skincare” practice. But never underestimate the powerful punch these can bring to your skincare routine. They can be just the product that takes your regimen from good to great by allowing better penetration of your anti-aging serums and for normalizing your skin’s natural oil production.

Swipes, while also full of amazing skin care nutrients, serve a different purpose. They are actually quite simple to use, as well!! They are perfectly dosed, pre-moistened pads that glide seamlessly over the skin to swipe away residual dirt, debris, and surface impurities. These are not like the heavy astringent pads you may remember from your youth, but an innovative combination of ten organic essential oils that simultaneously clarify, promote healing, and exfoliate dead and dulling cells. Used as a part of your regular skincare routine, these Swipes pH balance and prime your face for enhanced absorption of additional skincare products. Boost cellular renewal, brighten lackluster skin, decrease fine lines and wrinkles, and refine skin texture all with one swipe!
Mikel Kristi has two types of swipes, both that have their own amazing properties yielding fabulous results. This is another step 2 option in your Mikel Kristi regimen.
For great results but without as much of a kick as the Rejuvenating Swipes, try theRefreshing Swipes. These will refresh and balance your skin and they are the perfect addition to bring back life to tired and dull skin. Some of the key ingredients for gentle yet effective results are: organic aloe, willow herb, jasmine, clary sage, sandalwood, and raspberry leaf extract.
Absorption Of Other Products Is Their Biggest Advantage
Products will in fact be absorbed more efficiently through the epidermis, otherwise known as the outer most layer of the skin. Whether you are using toner, which can be sprayed onto a cotton pad or sprayed directly on to your face, or you use a simple swipe and gently wipe over the face, you are giving your skin the nutrients it needs to not only encourage a healthy complexion but balance pH and make other products penetrate more effectively.
