Summer Time Skin Health and Sun Damage
Summer is around the corner and no matter where you live, you’re most likely seeing the sun at some point. Whether you’re at the beach, hiking in the desert, playing at the park with the kids, or even just driving in your car, your skin is feeling the effects and sun damage is happening! Over time, a lack of taking care of your skin and not being diligent with your spf, suncare and skincare regimen WILL catch up to you. So, with that being said, the first question a lot of my patients ask when they come in is one you may too….
Can I reverse the damage I may have already done?
No matter your age and no matter how many years of sun damage you have, there is still hope!!! You CAN reverse damage and it is never too late! Simple things such as applying a daily sunscreen to your face, neck, chest, forearms and hands can make a world of difference. Remember the sun is the strongest between 10am and 4pm, so try to abstain from being outdoors each and every day during the time of days where the rays are at their peak strength.
Put on that sunscreen!!!
THIS is by far the most important. One of my favorite sunscreen lines is Elta MD. While protecting you from the sun, the active ingredients in Elta sunscreens are also calming and protecting sensitive skin types prone to discoloration and breakouts associated to acne and rosacea. It contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for UVA and UVB protection and the antioxidant quercetin to help prevent free radical damage.
Is sun damage the same thing as photo aging?
Yes. The medical term for sun damage IS “photoaging”. That is another buzzword used in skincare today. I’m sure you have heard it a bunch. Simply put, it is referring to sun damaged skin and premature aging. Over time, you will start to see uneven skin tone with brown spots, redness and broken blood vessels. You may even notice dry patches of skin call actinic keratoses which are pre-cancers. The best thing to do is cover up and wear SPF with zinc oxide for protection. Skip the sunburn and enjoy the summer.
What can I do to get rid of my Sun spots? Or Brown spots? Aging face? Too many wrinkles?
The list goes on and on! I have patients coming in all the time asking if certain skin care lines and ingredients will be their holy grail and cure them of their current skin woes. They certainly can help, but a lot of times, you may need more than a good skin care line to see the results you really will be happy about. Here are a few of the most common skincare concerns and how to treat them:

The Benefits of Vitamin A
When it comes to reversing sun damage, no skin care ingredient is better than retinoic acid, a form of vitamin A. It does everything from smoothing fine lines and fading dark spots to making pores look smaller. Make sure you look for Vitamin A in the form of retinaldehyde, Retinal or retinoic acid as an active ingredient- that way you know you’re buying a product that works!! Retinol and retinyl ester are the least effective.Mikel Kristi Vital A Rejuvenating Serum
