For most, the New Year usually means the time when we make laundry lists of all the things we will do more of (or less of!) and all the promises we swear we are going to make this year that we couldn’t keep last year!

Not only do we believe in the best skincare, we want to educate you as well. That is why I enjoy writing these blogs. I want my customers to understand the science of the skin and why the products we sell WORK!!!

On that note, let’s talk about a buzzword heard all over the skincare industry these days….

Elastin!! What is it??

Simply put, the definition of elastin is a protein forming the main constituent of elastic connective tissue, found especially in the dermis of the skin. It is so important because it provides resilience and elasticity to tissues and organs. Elastin is roughly 1000 times more flexible than collagen!!

The aging process…No no!! Don’t say it’s so! :)

Does your skin look the same now as it did in your 20’s, 30’s or 40’s?? It is pretty much inevitable that as you age, you will start to get wrinkles. Or perhaps you just aren’t sure why your skin isn’t plump, bright, and glowing like it used to be!

Well, this is the start of the aging process!! And two things affect it!! Collagen and elastin are what help with skin elasticity, and give it a smooth and plump look. Elastin is one of the main proteins involved with the extracellular matrix. It is found in our connective tissues, as well as the lungs, aorta, and skin. Elastin is what allows skin to stretch and then regain its original shape. It functions together with collagen as they are both found in the connective tissue, and perform similar functions.

Elastin is more related to surface level and skin function. It works side by side with collagen, as that is involved with skin function and internal issues as well.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It is formed through chains of amino acids, such as glycine and proline. These amino acids also act as building blocks for our body. Collagen is pivotal to our connective tissue health, anti-aging, strengthening the inner-most layers of our skin, preventing fine lines, wrinkling, sagging of the skin, and preventing pain in our joints and bones.

Did you know as we age, collagen production decreases by about 1% each year? This is a large contributing factor to the aging process. It’s also why you may start to have issues with your joints, bones, tendons, and skin.

What is the difference between collagen and elastin?

Collagen is a type of tough extracellular protein that imparts strength upon connective tissue. It is composed of three chains of proteins twisted around one another in a helical shape.

However, elastin is a much more stretchy protein found in connective tissue.

So, it sounds like I need both for optimum skin health!?

YES! Collagen and elastin are both essential for skin health. They are both essential for your overall skin health and skin function. They protect the skin, allow it to stretch and snap back into place, and give it strength.

How can I get MORE collagen and elastin?

Eating foods rich in vitamin C and amino acids are collagen super foods. Oranges, red peppers, kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and strawberries are all rich in vitamin C and are good for skin health as well!

Other great food sources:

  • Fish.
  • Chicken.
  • Egg whites.
  • Citrus fruits.
  • Berries.
  • Red and yellow vegetables.
  • Garlic.
  • White tea.
