Beauty Fads That May Do More Harm Than Good

Beauty Fads That May Do More Harm Than Good

Beauty Fads that may not actually create Beautiful Skin:

  1. Homemade Scrubs: Sugar scrubs, nut scrubs, salt scrubs or any kind of scrub, used on the delicate facial skin, can scratch the skin, causing long-term damage that may lead to the formation of a bumpy, grainy texture. For most, we are striving for smooth skin not sandpapery skin. Remember, daily chemical exfoliation with retinaldehyde and AHA’s, to aid your skin’s natural function and exfoliation, is the best approach. Better choices with Mikel Kristi would be Refreshing Botanical Wash, Vital A Revitalizing Serum and Rejuvenating Swipes.

  2. Homemade Cleansers: Making your own cleanser with baking soda can alter your skin’s pH leading a disruption of the protective acid mantle. The acid mantle protects your skin from dehydration, acne, irritation, rosacea and blemishes. Use a cleanser that is made for facial skin to prevent altering your skin’s pH and over-drying. I love our Purifying Botanical Wash.

  3. Homemade Moisturizers: Using olive oil, coconut oil or other oils from the pantry are not a good substitute for healthy hydrating ingredients. These types of oils could clog pores leading to acne. Because the molecular size of these types of oils, they cannot penetrate the skin to increase cellular hydration. Choose ingredients like sodium hyaluronate, oat beta glucan, AHAs or prickly pear extract for effective cellular plumping and skin hydration.
  1. Using Rubbing Alcohol as a Toner: For many people with acne, there is a misguided belief that treatment should be to “dry” out the skin with alcohol and over-cleansing. These can cause irritation, an increase in breakouts and an increase in oil production. Stick with toners that aid in balancing pH, protection of the acid mantle and gentle exfoliation to clean out your pores.
  1. Oral Collagen Supplements: Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body. Collagen is what keeps our skin firm and smooth and our pores small. But eating collagen will not actually produce collagen in the skin without skin stimulation. Just like eating protein will not give you big muscles without lifting weights to stimulate muscle growth. So, as long as you are eating a healthy diet with an adequate amount of protein then your skin will have enough amino acids to build collagen. Collagen stimulation in the skin comes from ingredients like peptides, retinaldehyde and vitamin C. Collagen stimulation also comes with skin treatments like lasers, BBL photofacial, chemical peels, microneedling, RF microneedling and ultrasound.
