Aging gracefully…What does that mean? Can we really turn back the hands of time? Well maybe we can’t completely stop the clock to go back to our 20s, but there are plenty of things we can do for ourselves to slow the aging process so we have the mental and physical health to enjoy our best life!! Here are 5 of my favorite tips!
Healthy foods are the way to go when it comes to aging gracefully. The Dietary Guidelines for Americansrecommends that you eat:
Avoid using solid fats for cooking and useoils instead. Stay away from processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats.
You should also keep your salt intake to a minimum to keep your blood pressure down.
Living A Healthy Life WILL In Fact Help You To Age Well
Yes it is true that genesinherited from your parents will affect the way your body ages, but there are a lot of other factors that you CAN control to influence the aging process as well. Like we mentioned above, a healthy diet is one of the biggest ones. But in addition to that, stress, environment, and lifestyle play an additional role. This means exercising regularly, moderate alcohol consumption, maintain a health weight, and keep your blood pressure and cholesterol within healthy limits.
Move Your Body!
According to a study published inThe Journal of Neuroscience, human levels of serotonin — the brain neurotransmitter that regulates mood, appetite, sleep, and blood pressure — naturally decrease with age, often resulting in depression, anxiety andhardening of the arteries. The good news is that exercise boosts serotonin levels and helps fight the stress hormone in our bodies called cortisol. Exercise is just as important as maintaining a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, or drinking water so it should rank high on the priority list. Just getting out for a brisk walk is enough to get that blood flowing, so make it a priority in your day!
Maintain A Good Attitude
Did you. Know that research shows your ability to deal with stress and unforeseen less-than-ideal moments is one of the most important factors in being able to age in a healthy way?? That means if we can just learn and train ourselves to better cope with stress and keep a positive attitude, we are doing ourselves the biggest favor as it will help us age well.
So how do we do that? It's all about outlook. Try to look for the good in all situations and know that the tough moments WILL in fact pass! Spend time with people you love! Do things you love!! Not too hard, right?
