The Truth: Hyaluronic Acid - Mikel Kristi

Youthful Suppleness

We all yearn for the skin of our youth with itssuppleness, resilience, and turgor. These youthful qualities are due in part to the skin’s high water content.  With aging, one of the biggest changes is the skin’s inability to produce moisture and retain water. The Big Beauty Industry will have you believe that the only way to a more youthful appearance is to slather on as much moisturizer as your skin and wallet can handle. Unfortunately, moisturizers do not help the skin in this way, just like a Band-Aid can’t actually heal a cut. With optimal skin health and proper skin supplementation, using ingredients like hyaluronic acid or sodium hyaluronate, you can regain that youthful suppleness.

Cell Turnover

Remember that in healthy skin that is functioning optimally, there is active cell turnover. This exfoliation process helps to prevent drying while aiding in the skin’s natural moisture production and retention. There are also fewer dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, and an increase in the organization of cells in the epidermis, which leads to more natural moisturizing factor (NMF) and elevated hyaluronic acid in your cells. Add in our Mikel Kristi  Vital A Rejuvenating Serum, with retinaldehyde, to aid in exfoliation and natural moisture production.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Supplement your skin with topical hydrating ingredients. The main goal of most moisturizers is to act as an occlusive while decreasing the water loss from the dead cells on the surface of the skin, or as a humectant to increase the water content of those same cells through water attracting agents. Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which absorbs 1000 times its weight in water, is an ingredient commonly used in many moisturizers. However, for any ingredient to effectively create change in the skin, it needs to be able to penetrate the skin’s barrier, be absorbed into the skin, and reach the cells it’s designed to help.  HA, in its primary form, has a high molecular weight which is prohibitive to skin penetration, and in this state acts more as an occlusive moisturizer that decreases water loss. For optimal penetration, HA needs to have a lower molecular weight, or better yet, contain a derivative of HA called sodium hyaluronate. Sodium hyaluronate is a salt of HA that can penetrate deeply into the skin, where it can attract water to plump and hydrate the skin’s cells.

Why does Skincare have to be so complicated?

All of us want beautiful and healthy skin. We want that youthful radiance to last us for years to come. And most of us continue to fall for marketing gimmicks that tell us THIS is the holy grail product so buy me now!! So we do!! Speaking from experience, it was the constant let down that I got from product after product that led me into my career field of aesthetic dermatology and aesthetics.

They say you are what you eat, but does that really hold true? The answer, in large part, is yes!!  There are many things that can give us beautiful skin. Now, some we cannot control (hello genetics!), but there are others that we can and that includes our skin, which is the largest organ of our body!! We all want that glowing and beautiful skin, and with the addition of foods into your diet that are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, you will be taking an easy first step in bringing your beautiful complexion out.
